Garage Doors

There is a variety of materials used today in garage doors. Most of the modern garage doors are built on technology that can withstand the toughest of time, even storms and natural law of wear and tear. Whether one opts for pre-fabricated, customized or do it yourself application, one must know the ABCs about garage doors.

There are two kinds of garage doors: the rolling garage door and the tilting garage door. The rolling garage door refers to a garage door that uses at least four horizontal sections. These are altogether hinged and installed with track rollers on both sections to provide easy rolling up straight and down. The tilting garage door on the other hand uses a panel that moves out and up.

The tilting garage doors are found to be less expensive than the rolling garage door. However the latter is more preferred in most homes because of the security and durability during weather. It is also convenient to control and operate.

Most garages these days are now equipped with automatic garage doors. This gives the home owner easy to access to the garage without ever pulling and pushing that heavy garage door. It used to be so heavy. But today, garage doors have become lighter. Thanks to innovation in the use of lighter materials.

Wood is the most favored material used for garage doors because of basic and nature-appealing look. Wood is also less expensive. Wood though requires constant maintenance as it extends and cracks as the wood material weathers. Among the list of wood materials are those coming trees like cedar, redwood, oak and mahogany.

Another addition to the growing number of garage door materials is aluminum. In fact aluminum has been largely used now not only in homes but also in business establishments in the United States. Aluminum is a super light weight material and it does not corrode making it a cost efficient component for garage doors.

Fiberglass garage doors are also getting a lot of attention in the market today because of being light weight. Fiberglass garage door though is framed in aluminum sections. Its list of benefits includes non-corrosiveness and transparency that enables light to pass through.

The most popular type of garage door system is the automatic overhead garage door. It is built with an automatic feature. This enables the home owner to access the garage using a remote control. This significant breakthrough is a big sigh of relief for most car owners since they don’t have to get out of the car to close or open the garage door. Another practical use of automatic garage door is convenience during heavy rains. A person does not have to get wet just to open the garage door.

Automated garage door system however has its own share of disadvantages. Take the case, for example, the remote control. The most common problem encountered by home owners is when the remote control’s batteries run out of power. In this situation, always check and ensure that you have spare batteries in the car.

When corrosion hits the rails of the automated garage door system, they could get pretty messy. Sometimes the doors get jammed and will not open. This however needs some serious maintenance with the help of professional.

Panic or emergency buttons are also provided with the automatic garage door. However, one must see to it that its operation is regularly checked to avoid accidents in case the door suddenly shuts. This can be very harmful to a car especially if it has just gone half through the garage. Worst is, it can hurt humans.

Over time garage doors will lose its effectivity. Bolts loosen up, rails rust, and even the panel crack and break. The life span of garage doors will all depend on how you take care of it by having periodic check ups and maintenance chores.
