Well, to some people the garage may just be a garage for them – a place for car porting-slash-work shop. For some, it’s a place for unwanted or not yet wanted things. Others call it the treasure room. Some would call it the junk room. A few would start looking at it as a good place for rest and while others have already enjoyed the comfort they have found with their garage turnaround. And many have had a few good earnings when they turned their garage to a shopping place. You might have just noticed that the garage has definitely transformed into a versatile facility.
Whatever these people did to their garages, there are only two things they could have possibly done. Either they kept their garages neat by organizing and employing good garage shelving ideas or they just kept their garages naughty by letting it fix itself and deal with all the mess inside.
Oh, if only stuff are capable of fixing and sorting out themselves, people won’t have problems. Or the garage wouldn’t have problems. Mostly, there has been little attention that is given to garage shelving. But that was long before people knew how it was really good to keep the place clean and orderly.
They say that if the house is a person’s palace, the garage is his treasure room. It is where he stores his jewels. At the same time it’s also his goldsmith’s shop. Homeowners now have looked into the usefulness of the garage other than just a storage or parking place. Garage shelving can really give your garage a good spin into something fully functional.
Now if you are a DIYer yet still a rookie when it comes to garage shelving, don’t overestimate your capability. You can do a lot of things to achieve great garage storage shelving.
It’s a great help if the garage wall is made of wood so it would be easy for you to screw in the shelves. But if not, you will need an extra pair of hands to help you drill holes. A very basic design for garage shelving systems can usually take only four hours to assemble and mount. Given all the necessary tools and finishing it off with a nice and neat paint, you will find that your own garage shelves will look like it’s been done by pros.
Firstly, determine how long and how wide your shelves will go. It must not however compete with the car for space. Then evenly divide the total length into the individual height of every shelf. Normally the depth of the shelves is 16 inches but you can go as deep as 24 inches. You can opt for five shelves all in all as long as each shelf can accommodate an adequate height for common things like paint cans. The average width of shelves in homes is 8 feet but you can go wider if the space allows.
It is best to keep and observe the previously mentioned dimensions for you to fully maximize your materials. For the frames, you can use a lumber dimension of 2 x 3. Plywood with the thickness of three quarters of an inch would do for the walls. Always seek assistance from more skilled people even if you are using a DIY garage shelving kit.
If you find this option a little difficult, you can purchase pre-fabricated shelves that are ready to mount and screw onto your garage wall. You can also opt for pre-built shelves that have drawers and cabinets. You choose between wood shelves and steel shelves, anything that adds good look to your garage.
Some of these pre-fab shelves though may be smaller so look for shelves that are durable and can support the weight of some of your heavy tools. The most important however is that your shelves can be really used. If you already have garage shelves at home, you might want to extend them. And lastly, maximize and make the most out of your shelves. Make it a good practice to place your tools on the right place after using them.
