It is not that you are on a tight budget, but can you help it? Looking at your garage with all that disorder doesn’t seem to be like an ideal home exterior for you. Now everybody knows garages are meant to be a storage place in the house. A place to store the car, the working clothes, the junks, the used paints, and all the stuff you need for your house chores. Isn’t it a great time to maximize your garage storage?
The greatest principle in garage organizing is making something out of nothing. Your garage storage system may be overcrowded now and all your things are now in distress of space clutter. Your car may even be suffering from space deprivation when it’s supposed to be the real star in the garage. Some useless, still can-do stuffs, and things you don’t need but you just can’t get rid of, are lodging the most of the garage space.
Since the garage is like a twin functioning sanctuary for your car and your working tools, it would be great to have extra large spaces. This principle however will tell you to look for unlikely places for garage storage. The car should be accommodated well. While make use of spaces in the ceiling, the beams or somewhere you can hang and get rid of the stuff lying on the floor.
The secret is to use the bare wall as a rear surface for your garage storage shelves. You can use hanging shelves as a good alternative to wall mounted shelves. Or make use of movable stand shelves so that you can push or pull them easily. You can easily attach shelves on your garage walls but if the walls do not have interior you can still do something about it.
And that’s when stud shelves come in. Another great way to make the most out from your garage is by making shelves in between spaces of the studs. You can do this by installing three quarters of an inch thick plywood or any hard board and nailing them on the studs. The studs will make good support framing for the shelves. The stud shelves are perfect for smaller and lighter things. Finish it off with a nice and neat paint.
Now you may not want to cover the whole garage wall with stud shelves. In this case, turn the extra bare studs into simple hangers. Just look for a spare PVC pipe, or steel pipe that has less than an inch in diameter. Cut a part of the pipe to fit in perfectly in between the studs, screw in for it to be securely held, and there goes your hanger. Then hang on your golf clubs, or working tools like floor mop and fishing rod.
Hangers are just a few of the garage storage ideas you can employ. If you just can’t get enough of hangers. Use peg hooks to screw in directly to the studs. Or better yet, look for a board, cut it to a width that will fit nicely across two studs, screw in, and install the peg hooks.
Perforated board is also all the rage as an addition to your garage storage organizers. The perforated hardboard lets you easily fix peg hooks anywhere in the board. It is best to supplement the board with framing using 1 inch by ½ inch stick at the back of it before mounting it to the wall. For wider boards, add a vertical frame at the center for a more stable installation. It is not advised however to directly install the perforated board to the garage wall as it will only give insufficient space at the back of it for the peg hooks.
These are just few of the things that you can actually apply to make the most out of your garage storage. Make it a point to always provide storage for every tool and stuff you keep in the garage. Never allow anything to be placed in the floor and encourage other members of the house to habitually return tools on its right place after using.
